The basics

What is user identification?

3 steps to start
  1. 01Track events as usual
  2. 02Call identify on login or signup
  3. 03Browse profiles and timelines

User identification links activity to a known user profile. Instead of a nameless visit, you see a person you can look up, follow over time and understand in context.

With Pieowl it works like this:

  1. A visitor arrives and is counted anonymously
  2. When they sign up or log in, you call identify() with your own user ID and any properties you want
  3. The current session and every later event are linked to that profile
pieowl('identify', {
  profileId: 'user_123',
  email: 'jane@example.com',
  properties: { plan: 'pro' }
});

From then on, you can see when they first appeared, when they were last active, their sessions, every event they sent, their revenue and the properties you attached (plan, company, role and so on).

That lets you answer questions like:

  • What did this user do in the last 7 days?
  • Which features does this account actually use?
  • Who are our most active users?
  • Has this customer gone quiet?

Selling to companies? Put users into groups, such as a workspace or account, and look at activity per company.

You control what you send. Pieowl sets no cookies and doesn't store IP addresses. Visitors you don't identify stay anonymous, and their visitor ID changes every day.

How user identification works

Three steps from anonymous visitors to useful user profiles.

  1. 1

    Track events as usual

    Install the script or an SDK and send events. Before you identify someone, their activity is counted under a daily visitor ID.

  2. 2

    Call identify on login or signup

    Pass your user ID and optional properties like email, plan or company. The current session and all later events link to that profile.

  3. 3

    Browse profiles and timelines

    Open any profile to see first seen, last seen, events, sessions, revenue and the properties you attached.

Use cases

Who uses user profiles

User profiles help support, sales and product teams.

  • Support teams

    Open a user's timeline before you reply to a ticket. See what they clicked and where they got stuck, without asking them to describe every step.

  • Sales teams

    See which features a prospect has tried, how often they return and when they were last active. Reach out with context.

  • Product teams

    Find your power users and learn what they do differently. Compare people who stay with people who leave.

  • Customer success

    Watch activity over time. Notice accounts going quiet and reach out before they cancel.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about user identification in Pieowl.

What happens before a user is identified?

Their activity is counted under a visitor ID. That ID is a hash that changes every day. When you call identify, the current session and every later event link to the user's profile.

Is this GDPR-friendly?

Pieowl is built for GDPR: no cookies and no stored IP addresses. When you identify users, you decide which personal data you send, so check that against your own privacy policy.

How is this different from Google Analytics?

Pieowl gives you a profile page for each identified user with their full event timeline, sessions, revenue and custom properties. You can open one person's history in a click.

Can I attach custom properties to users?

Yes. Pass any key-value pairs when you call identify, such as plan, company or role. You can filter and segment users by these properties in your reports.

Do I need to identify every user?

No. Identification is optional. Anonymous visitors still create events and sessions. Most teams identify people after login or signup.
