The basics

What is session tracking?

3 steps to start
  1. 01Events start a session
  2. 02Activity is grouped automatically
  3. 03Sessions connect to everything

A session is the stretch of activity from when someone arrives on your site to when they leave. It starts on an entry page, includes every page view and event along the way, and ends after 30 minutes without activity.

Some tools give you too little (page-view counts with no sense of flow). Others give you too much (hours of recordings to watch). Pieowl gives you both options:

  • Session tracking (always on): a clear timeline of each session, with pages, events, duration, referrer and device
  • Session replay (opt-in): a playable recording of the session, so you can see what the visitor clicked and where they got confused

For every session, Pieowl records:

  • Entry and exit page: where the visit started and where it ended
  • Pages visited in order: the path through your site or app
  • Events: signups, clicks, purchases or any custom event
  • Duration: how long the session lasted
  • Referrer and UTM parameters: how the visitor got there
  • Device, browser and location: context for each visit

That means you can answer questions like:

  • Which pages do people visit before they sign up?
  • Do visitors from search behave differently from paid traffic?
  • Are sessions that end in a purchase longer than the rest?

Pieowl sets no cookies. Sessions are grouped with a visitor ID that's a daily-changing hash, and the IP address is not stored. Every event belongs to a session, and sessions of identified users sit on their profile, so funnels, retention and user timelines all have session context.

Session tracking on every plan

What you get with session tracking

Clear session data that answers real questions, with optional replay when you need the full picture.

Session tracking · 6 capabilities
  • Entry and exit pages

See where visitors land and where they leave. Find your strongest entry points and the pages that lose people.

  • Page path per session

See the pages a visitor viewed in a session, in order. Understand how people move through your site.

  • Events within a session

Every event, like a signup, click or purchase, belongs to a session. See what someone did and in what order.

  • Duration and engagement

See how long sessions last and how many pages they include. Spot engaged visits and bounces.

  • Referrer and UTM attribution

Know how each visitor arrived, from search, a campaign or a direct link, and compare sessions across sources.

  • Session replay (opt-in)

Turn on session replay to watch real sessions. Text and form fields are always hidden, and the recorder only loads when replay is on.

How session tracking works

Sessions are created automatically from the events you already send.

  1. 1

    Events start a session

When a visitor sends their first event, like a page view, Pieowl starts a session. No extra code: sessions come from your events.

  2. 2

    Activity is grouped automatically

Later events from the same visitor join that session. After 30 minutes without activity the session ends, and the next event starts a new one.

  3. 3

    Sessions connect to everything

Each session links to its events, pages and, for identified users, their profile. Turn on session replay to also record a playable copy.

Use cases

Who uses session tracking

Teams that need to understand user journeys, from session data to full replay.

  • Product teams

See how people move through your product. Check the pages and events in a session, then open the replay to see where they got stuck.

  • Support and success teams

When a user reports a problem, open their recent sessions to see what pages they visited and what they did.

  • Privacy-conscious teams

Session tracking works without cookies or recordings. Replay is opt-in, with text and form fields always hidden.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about session tracking with Pieowl.

Does Pieowl have session replay?

Yes. Session replay is opt-in. Turn it on in Settings → Site and the recorder loads as a separate script. When it's off, the recorder is never loaded.

Do I need to set up session tracking separately?

No. Sessions are created automatically from the events and page views you already send. There's no extra SDK or setup step.

How does Pieowl define a session?

A session starts with a visitor's first event and ends after 30 minutes without activity. If they come back after that, a new session begins.

Can I see one user's sessions?

Yes. The Sessions page lists every session, and each identified user's profile shows their sessions with the pages and events in each one. If replay is on, you can play the session back too.

Does session tracking need cookies?

No. Pieowl never sets a cookie. Sessions are grouped with a visitor ID made from a hash of browser, IP, site and a secret salt that changes daily, and the IP itself is not stored.
