The basics

What is event tracking?

3 steps to start
  1. 01Add the script or an SDK
  2. 02Send events from your product
  3. 03Analyze in reports, funnels and retention

Event tracking is the base of product analytics. Instead of only counting page views, you record each action a user takes as an event: a click, a signup, a purchase. Each event has a name and can carry properties.

Every action becomes a data point you can filter and chart. That's how you answer questions like:

  • How many users finished onboarding this week?
  • Which features do paying customers use most?
  • Where in the signup flow do people give up?

Tools built around sessions and page views are fine for traffic reports. They fall short when you need to know what people do inside your app.

With Pieowl, you send events from your site, app or server with a small SDK or the HTTP API. Each event has a name (for example signup_completed) and optional properties (for example plan: pro). The same events feed funnels, retention, user profiles and the MCP server, so you track once and use the data everywhere.

pieowl('track', 'signup_completed', { plan: 'pro' });

Pieowl sets no cookies and doesn't store IP addresses. Your data is stored in the EU.

Event tracking on every plan

What you can track

From page views to custom conversion events, you see what users actually do.

Event tracking · 6 capabilities
  • Page views and screen views

Turn on automatic page views and the script also catches route changes in single-page apps. Each view comes with the path, title and referrer.

  • Clicks without extra code

Add a data-track attribute to a button or link and Pieowl sends an event when it's clicked. Outgoing link clicks can be tracked automatically too.

  • Custom events and properties

Name your own events (signup, purchase, feature_used) and attach properties you can filter and break down by later.

  • Users and sessions

Every event belongs to a session and a visitor. Call identify after login and later events link to that user's profile.

  • Server-side events

Send events from your backend with the Node SDK or the HTTP API. Useful for payments, webhooks and background jobs.

  • Funnels, retention and profiles

The same events power conversion funnels, retention charts and per-user timelines. You can also ask your AI assistant about them over MCP.

How event tracking works

Three steps from zero to a clear view of your product.

  1. 1

Add the script or an SDK

Paste one script tag into any site, including Next.js, Astro and Nuxt, or install an SDK for React Native or plain JavaScript.

  2. 2

    Send events from your product

Page views can be tracked automatically. Call track for custom events like signup or purchase, with any properties you need.

  3. 3

Analyze in reports, funnels and retention

Events flow into dashboards, funnels, retention charts and user profiles. One tracking setup powers all of them.

Use cases

Who uses event tracking

Founders, product teams and marketers use events to answer real questions.

  • Founders and product teams

See which features get used, where users drop off, and how behavior differs between groups of users.

  • Growth and marketing

Measure the path from visit to signup and from signup to purchase. Compare campaigns by what people did, not just by clicks.

  • Support and success

Open a user's event timeline before you reply to a ticket. You can see what they did instead of asking them to explain.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about event tracking with Pieowl.

Do I need cookies for event tracking?

No. Pieowl never sets a cookie. Visitors are counted with a hash of browser, IP, site and a secret salt that changes every day, and the IP itself is not stored. Funnels and retention work for logged-in users across days once you call identify.

How is this different from Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is built around traffic and marketing reports. Pieowl gives you web analytics plus product analytics on the same events: funnels, retention, cohorts, user profiles and session replay. You can also ask your AI assistant about them over MCP.

Can I track custom events?

Yes. Send any event name with optional properties such as plan, value or feature name. Custom events work in funnels, retention, reports and user profiles just like page views.

Can I send events from my server?

Yes. Use the Node SDK or the HTTP API with your client ID and secret. Server events land in the same site as your browser events.
