The problem
Why developers dislike their analytics setup
Many analytics tools are built for marketers first. They feel wrong when you care about speed and privacy.
- 01
Cookies and consent work
Cookie-based analytics, like Google Analytics, sets cookies on every visit. In many places that means a consent banner, plus code to load scripts only after consent.
- 02
No say in where data lives
Many teams want analytics data stored in the EU. Not every analytics tool keeps it there.
- 03
Questions mean dashboard trips
You're in your editor when a question comes up. Answering it means opening another tool and building a report.
- 04
Heavy scripts
Every extra kilobyte of third-party script is work for your users' browsers. Analytics shouldn't be the heaviest thing on the page.
What you get
Built the way developers expect
Pieowl is TypeScript-first, API-driven and easy to fit into a modern workflow.
SDKs for your stack
A script tag for Next.js, Astro, Nuxt, Express or any other site. Plain JavaScript, React Native, a core Node SDK and bot tracking, all on npm under @pieowl. Anything else can use the HTTP API.
Small tracking script
The web script is about 3 KB gzipped and loads asynchronously. The session replay recorder is a separate script that only loads if you turn replay on.
HTTP API
Track events, export raw events and chart data, and manage sites and clients through a documented API.
MCP server for your AI editor
Connect Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf or VS Code to your analytics and ask questions without leaving your editor.
EU cloud
Your data is stored in our EU cloud.
No cookies
Pieowl never sets a cookie. Visitors are counted with a daily-changing hash, and IP addresses are not stored.
Event-based data model
Send any event name with any properties. Identify users, attach them to groups for B2B, and build funnels and retention on top.
Declarative tracking with data attributes
Add a data-track attribute to a button or link and clicks are sent as events, with no JavaScript to write.
Proxy through your own domain
In Next.js, a route handler can serve the script and forward events through your own domain, so fewer events get lost to ad blockers.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Technical questions from developers looking at Pieowl.
Can I self-host Pieowl?
No. Pieowl runs only in our EU cloud. You can export raw events through the API or to S3 or Google Cloud Storage at any time.
What's the data architecture?
Events arrive at the API, go through a Redis queue, and background workers write them to ClickHouse in batches. PostgreSQL holds users, sites and dashboards.
Can I get raw event data?
Yes. Export raw events and chart data through the API, or export events to S3 or Google Cloud Storage.
How does tracking without cookies work?
The visitor ID is a hash of browser, IP, site and a secret salt. The salt changes every day, so the same visitor gets a new ID the next day. The IP is used for the location lookup and the hash, then dropped; it's not stored. Call identify to follow logged-in users across days.
Are the SDKs written in TypeScript?
Yes. The JavaScript SDKs ship with full type definitions.
Can I track server-side events?
Yes. Use the Node SDK, or call the HTTP API from any language with your client ID and secret. Server-side tracking is useful for payments, webhooks and background jobs.
How does Pieowl compare to PostHog?
PostHog covers more products, like error tracking and a data warehouse, and has a large free tier of 1M events a month (checked October 2026). PostHog can also be self-hosted; Pieowl has no self-hosted version. Pieowl focuses on analytics: events, funnels, retention, cohorts, replay and revenue, with an MCP server for your AI assistant and simple monthly prices.
How big is the tracking script?
About 3 KB gzipped. It loads asynchronously and doesn't block rendering. The session replay recorder is a separate script that only loads when replay is on.
