The basics

What is conversion tracking?

4 steps to start
  1. 01Pick your events
  2. 02Choose the date range and period
  3. 03Add a breakdown (optional)
  4. 04Watch the trend and act

Conversion tracking measures how often people complete a goal. For example, going from session_start to signup, or from signup to purchase. You pick a start event and a goal event, and Pieowl calculates the conversion rate for every period you choose.

If you know funnels, conversions will feel familiar. Both measure whether people complete a sequence. The difference is the question they answer:

  • Funnels show where people drop off in a multi-step flow: "which step loses the most people?"
  • Conversions show trends: "is our conversion getting better or worse over time?"

A conversion report gives you:

  • Conversion rate over time: see the rate day by day or week by week, and spot the effect of a release or a broken page
  • Average, best and worst: your overall average plus the periods and groups that did best and worst
  • Breakdowns: split conversion by device, country, campaign or any property you send, and compare the lines on one chart
  • Totals: the number of conversions next to the rate, so you see volume as well as percentage

Conversion reports use the same events as everything else in Pieowl. Define a flow once and you get a chart that tells you, at a glance, whether things are getting better.

Conversion on every plan

What you can do with conversions

Watch, compare and improve your most important flows.

Conversion · 6 capabilities
  • Conversion trends over time

Plot your conversion rate by day, week or month. Spot trends, seasonal patterns and the effect of product changes.

  • Breakdowns by any property

Split conversion by device, country, traffic source, campaign or your own properties. Each value gets its own line on the chart.

  • Best and worst at a glance

A summary shows your average rate, the best and worst periods, and the best and worst groups when you use a breakdown.

  • Flexible flow definition

A conversion is any two events: a start, such as session_start, and a goal, such as purchase. Change them any time without new tracking code.

  • Per-period detail table

Below the chart, a table lists the rate for every period and every group. Sort it to find the exact data point you need.

  • Save and share reports

Save a conversion report, add it to a dashboard and share it by link so the whole team watches the same number.

Set up

How conversion tracking works

Set up a conversion report in seconds with events you already track.

  1. 1

    Pick your events

Choose a start event, such as session_start, and a goal event, such as signup or purchase. These are events you already send.

  2. 2

Choose the date range and period

Pick a date range and whether to see conversion by day, week or month. Pieowl calculates the rate for each period.

  3. 3

    Add a breakdown (optional)

Break down by device, country, campaign or any event property. Each value gets its own line on the chart and its own row in the table.

  4. 4

    Watch the trend and act

Check the chart after each release or campaign. If the rate drops for one group, you'll see it and know where to look.

Use cases

Who uses conversion tracking

Teams that need to watch and improve conversion over time.

  • Growth and product teams

Watch signup-to-activation or free-to-paid conversion week by week. Check that product changes really move the number.

  • Marketing and campaigns

Compare conversion across traffic sources, campaigns or landing pages. See which channels convert best and whether that's changing.

  • Online shops

Track visit-to-purchase conversion by device and country. Spot a checkout problem on one device before it costs you a week of sales.

  • Mobile and cross-platform teams

Break down by platform, app version or device type. Catch problems that only show up on one platform.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about conversion tracking in Pieowl.

How is this different from funnels?

Funnels show a multi-step sequence and where people drop off at each step. Conversions focus on one flow, start to goal, and show how the rate changes over time. Use funnels to find where people get stuck; use conversions to see whether things are getting better or worse.

Can I compare two versions of a page?

If you send a property that names the version, you can break conversion down by it and see each version's rate over time. Pieowl doesn't split traffic or run experiments for you. You decide who sees which version.

What events can I use?

Any events you already track. A conversion is defined by two events: a start and a goal. Common examples are session_start to signup, signup to purchase, or page view to add_to_cart.

Can I see absolute numbers next to rates?

Yes. Every conversion report shows the rate and the total number of conversions. The table below the chart lists the numbers for each period and each group.
