Best Matomo alternative.
Matomo is a solid, privacy-minded tool, but it uses cookies by default and puts funnels, replay and cohorts in paid plans. Pieowl sets no cookies, includes every feature on every plan, and lets your own AI assistant answer questions about your data over MCP.

Pieowl vs Matomo: Which is right for you?
Pieowl if…
- 1You want no cookies without changing any settings
- 2You want funnels, cohorts and replay without buying a bundle
- 3You want to ask your AI assistant about your data
Matomo if…
- 1You need heatmaps, form analytics or a tag manager
- 2You want to import your Google Analytics history
- 3You need ISO 27001 from your vendor or SAML login
Both tools care about privacy. The main differences are cookies, which features cost extra, how you get answers, and hosting: Matomo can be self-hosted, while Pieowl is cloud only.
Why consider Pieowl over Matomo?
Matomo is a long-standing choice for teams that want to own their analytics. You can self-host the free Community edition with unlimited users and hits, or use Matomo Cloud, which stores data in Frankfurt. It has a large feature set, including heatmaps, form analytics, A/B testing and a tag manager.
Many of those features cost extra. In Matomo Cloud, cohorts sit in the higher tiers. If you self-host, funnels, heatmaps, session recording and form analytics come with the paid on-premise bundles, which start at €230/mo on yearly billing. A/B testing is in the Enterprise bundle.
Matomo also uses cookies by default. You can turn them off with a setting, and Matomo says cookieless tracking may be consent-exempt in some places. Pieowl sets no cookies at all, so there is nothing to switch off. It also does not store IP addresses.
Pieowl includes funnels, retention, cohorts, session replay, revenue tracking and an MCP server for your AI assistant on every plan. If you need heatmaps, a tag manager, a Google Analytics import or a self-hosted install, Matomo is the better pick today. Pieowl is cloud only.

Migrating from Matomo to Pieowl
You can run both tools side by side while you switch, then remove Matomo when the numbers line up.
- 01Add the Pieowl script or SDK
Add the Pieowl script tag or an SDK next to your Matomo tracker. Page views and outgoing links are tracked for you.
- 02Map your Matomo events
A Matomo call like _paq.push(['trackEvent', 'Video', 'Play']) becomes pieowl.track('video_play', { category: 'Video' }).
- 03Identify logged-in users
Where you use Matomo's setUserId, call pieowl.identify({ profileId: user.id }) instead.
- 04Build your reports
Set up funnels, retention and dashboards. They are included, so there are no plugins or bundles to buy.
- 05Review your cookie banner
Pieowl sets no cookies, so it adds no cookies to your banner. Whether you still need a banner depends on your country, on features like session replay and on your other tools.

Where Pieowl is a better fit than Matomo
Pieowl suits teams that want product analytics and plain answers without buying add-ons.
Product teams
Track signups, activation and retention with funnels, cohorts and user profiles, not just page views.
Every feature included
Funnels, cohorts and session replay are on every Pieowl plan. With Matomo, several of these come with paid plans.
No cookies by default
Pieowl never sets a cookie and does not store IP addresses. There is no setting to remember to change.
Answers without building reports
Connect Claude or Cursor over MCP and ask "Which pages lead to the most signups?" Matomo has no AI assistant.
A small, fast tracker
The Pieowl tracking script is about 3 KB gzipped, and the replay add-on only loads if you turn replay on.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about switching from Matomo to Pieowl.
Is Matomo free?
The self-hosted Community edition is free, with unlimited users and hits. Features like funnels, heatmaps and session recording come with paid on-premise bundles, which start at €230/mo on yearly billing. Matomo Cloud starts at €29/mo for 50,000 hits on monthly billing. Checked October 2026.
Does Matomo use cookies?
Yes, by default. Matomo says it uses cookies to store some information about visitors between visits. You can turn them off with a setting. Pieowl sets no cookies at all.
Do I need a cookie banner with Pieowl?
Often not for analytics. Pieowl sets no cookies and stores nothing on your visitors' devices, so in many cases you don't need a consent banner for it. It depends on your country and the features you use: session replay needs consent, and some countries, like Germany, Poland and Ireland, have no exemption for analytics. Our docs page "Do you need a cookie banner?" has the details. It also depends on the other tools on your site.
What Matomo features will I lose?
Pieowl has no heatmaps, form analytics, tag manager, A/B testing tool or Google Analytics import. If you rely on these, Matomo may still be the better fit.
What will I gain?
Funnels, retention, cohorts, user profiles, session replay and revenue tracking on every plan, plus an MCP server, so your own AI assistant can answer questions about your data.
Where is my data stored?
Matomo Cloud stores data in Frankfurt, Germany. Pieowl's cloud runs in the EU. Matomo can also be self-hosted on your own server; Pieowl has no self-hosted option.
Can I self-host Pieowl?
No. Pieowl is cloud only, hosted in the EU. Matomo's free Community edition can be self-hosted and covers the core, and premium features come with paid bundles.
Can I import my Matomo data?
Not with one click. Pieowl has importers for Mixpanel, Amplitude and Umami. For Matomo, you can send exported events to the bulk import API, or run both tools side by side for a while.
